Creating Your Future: 10 Tips to Creating Your Vision Board
Creating a vision board is a wonderful way to visualize and manifest your goals and dreams. Here are some questions to guide you in creating your vision boards:
- What are your top three personal goals for the next year?
This helps you to focus on specific, achievable goals. I use the SMART method to help. Goals should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant/Realistic and Time-bound. Breakdown of the acronym:
- Specific: Clearly outlines exactly what needs to be accomplished, leaving no room for ambiguity.
- Measurable: Provides a way to track progress with quantifiable metrics, like numbers or percentages.
- Achievable: Is realistic and attainable given the available resources and circumstances.
- Relevant: Aligns with overall objectives and priorities.
- Time-bound: Has a defined deadline for completion.
Example of a SMART goal: “Increase sales by 15% within the next quarter by launching a targeted social media marketing campaign aimed at new customers.”
- How do you want to feel in your daily life?
I encourage you to consider the emotions and experiences you want to cultivate. Do you want to be happy in your daily life, feel fulfilled at the end of the day, or be compassionate? The experiences that you choose and the actions you take during your day should reflect the emotions that help you get to your desired goal.
- What are some long-term dreams or aspirations you have?
I want you to think beyond immediate goals and consider a more significant life vision. The older I get, the more I want to fulfill my aspirations, such as traveling to places on my bucket list and having experiences that I love, such as going to plays or helping young girls to create and reach their goals!
- Who inspires you and why?
Identifying role models can help you clarify the qualities and achievements you admire. I don’t have a single role model – I tend to have ones who embody my current aspirations or goals regardless of age. Oprah Winfrey is one of my role models in business, while I love how Taylor Swift safeguards her image. My mother’s parenting style of tenacity and the ability to put her children first is the parenting role model that I follow, while I have friends who demonstrate what NOT to do as a parent.
- What obstacles do you currently face, and how can you overcome them?
This question encourages you to wear your problem-solving hat and consider how to be resilient in the face of possible adversity. For example, where is the first place you will look for a job if you lose your current job tomorrow? Can you prepare for that possibility now? Do you know where your parents/spouse hide their important documents in case of an emergency?
- What are your core values, and how do they influence your vision?
Do you even know your core values? Identifying your core values lets you align your vision with your fundamental beliefs and principles guiding your decisions, behavior, and interaction with the world.
Are you working for a company that embraces your core values? Core values include honesty, integrity, respect, humility, creativity, consistency, quality, and reliability.
- What areas of your life do you want to improve or change?
This can include career, relationships, health, or personal growth. What can you do this year that you didn’t do last year to accomplish your goals?
- Are you loving your current career? If not, what keeps you there, and what needs to change to leave that job?
- Are you in a fulfilling relationship? How will it continue to prosper, or is this the year of divorce?
- Did I schedule all my regular doctor’s appointments for the year? Breast cancer screening? Regular physical, dental, and hearing appointments?
- Do you want to spend more time with your loved ones?
- How about getting more sleep?
- What images or symbols resonate with your vision?
Visual elements are crucial for a vision board, so what are the most powerful imageries that you can incorporate into your vision board?
- Personal pictures are more powerful than ones you find on free boards; however, since it’s only a representation of what you want, use free images to create your board.
- Flowers, stickers, words…all are impactful.
- Canva has vision board templates that are pleasing to the eye – you have to provide personal pictures.
- What achievements are you most proud of, and how can they inform your future goals?
Reflecting on past successes can boost confidence and provide insight into future aspirations. Look to last year’s social media posts to see your 2024 achievements. They can jumpstart this year’s goals.
- How do you plan to stay motivated and accountable to your vision?
I encourage you to think about strategies for maintaining focus and commitment.
- Use your calendar as a monthly accountability tool. For each month through the end of the year, or each quarter, put “Check my vision board” at the beginning or end of the month.
- Use a Legend Planner. https://amzn.to/3BFCpkg
